Photograph by Richard DeZinno

I was born in the Philippines and raised there until I was 14, when my family immigrated to the United States. Inspired by my grandfather, a Bataan Death March survivor who fought for the US during World War II, I enlisted in the Army right out of high school. I was deployed twice to Iraq as a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division and quickly attained the rank of Sergeant. I aspired to have a long career in the military, but the effects of the stresses of war put a halt to those best-laid plans.

Lost and adrift after my honorable discharge, I picked up a camera and started taking pictures. I fell in love with photography, which provided clarity and comfort. With the help of the GI Bill, I attended the San Francisco Art Institute to further pursue my passion. In 2016, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and was awarded the John Collier Award in Photography.

I love to photograph people. I see my camera not only as a tool of trade, but as a way to connect with my fellow human beings. I am drawn to the vitality of life, and find joy in being able to capture the human spirit and preserve it in a photograph.
